  • "Soon One Morning" is the second collection in Lomax Archive’s “Sacred Songs” series, a collection of hymns, spirituals and sacred songs from John A. and Alan Lomax's recording trips through the American South from 1937-1978. These recordings capture the deep emotion and intensity of spiritual singing, from the sounds of sacred harp to the pews of the Southern church. From Mississippi to Kentucky, Alabama to Virginia and Arkansas to Tennessee, these are foundational recordings that have been lovingly remastered and restored for the enjoyment of generations to come.

  • Nevile Marcano, AKA "Tiger" or "Growling Tiger," was the last singer and only calypsonian that Alan Lomax recorded on his 1962 Caribbean field trip. Dr. J.D. Elder, Ph.D., director of the Adult Education Center in Port of Spain, arranged the recordings. Elder acted as field organizer for Lomax in Trinidad; and the two men went on to collaborate many times in the succeeding years. Tiger's distinctive style would have set him apart even if Lomax had been able to record other great golden age artists, such as Atila the Hun, Lord Executor, and others.

    Though younger, he was steeped in the older African, French, and Spanish musics of Trinidad. He favored the old-style minor key calypsos (hence his billing as the "King of Mi Minor" (or musical key of E minor), heavily flavored with the French patois he learned from his grandmother. Though once sung primarily in French patois, by the time of Tiger's debut calypsos were almost wholly sung in English.

    As a performer, both in the recording studio and before an audience, Tiger deployed expert timing, rhythm, harmonic and rhythmic shading, and above all, a sense of presence. Like the boxer that he once was, trained to fight fiercely but not to get carried away with anger, Tiger could gauge how to put his songs over with his audience. Although his singing conveyed a wide range of feelings, he always maintained a sense of mastery over his setting.

    Although Alan Lomax's recording sessions with Growling Tiger were the only ones he made of a professional calypsonian, he nevertheless had a longstanding involvement with the music. In 1946 he had produced a concert at New York's Town Hall featuring Lord Invader (singer of the original "Rum and Coca Cola"), Macbeth the Great, and Duke of Iron. Lord Invader also participated in the memorial concert for Leadbelly that Lomax produced in 1951. He recorded a wide variety of stick-fighting songs, joropos, and rural calypsos during his 1962 Caribbean trip. He treasured calypso for its mix of the old and new, for its endless originality and inventiveness, and because it was a music of grassroots expression and popular protest.

    As he told the Town Hall audience in 1946: "It's got streaks of African in it, it's got stripes of Spanish, it's got little elements of French, but somehow it all gets sung in English and it covers every subject under the sun!"

    Repatriations to Nevis and St. Kitts, St. Lucia, Guadeloupe and the French Antilles, and Trinidad have been completed, with Grenada, Carriacou, and Haiti pending.

    ACE's Caribbean Repatriation Program has been carried out in collaboration with the Center for Black Music Research at Columbia College, Chicago, for the Eastern Caribbean, and the Green Family Foundation for Haiti.

    Lomax's Caribbean recordings, photographs, film, and notes are the legacy of the countries he visited. As such, they should reside in permanent national repositories. It is equally important to return them to the communities, families, and individuals who created them, in meaningful and accessible forms. We try to ensure that they will be circulated and used to provide a basis for cultural identity, for an understanding of history, and for a creative future.

  • In 1936, in the middle of scouring rural America for folk music that might have vanished forever if not for his efforts, ethnomusicologist Alan Lomax traipsed off to Haiti for four months with his 19-year-old fiancée and a 55-pound recording unit. The results are only now available for anyone to hear. "Haiti (1936-1937) Vol. 1 - Treasures from the Lomax Archive" brings together highlights from the 2011 GRAMMY nominated box set "Alan Lomax in Haiti" and traces how Mr. Lomax was out to document the music of everyday Haitians, in whatever form, and to hunt for the influence of African music, as he had in the U.S. From the most accessible sounds to the dance bands of Port-au-Prince, who had incorporated New Orleans jazz from records imported by occupying U.S. Marines, Lomax followed leads around the country, recording celebratory carnival songs, work songs, and eventually the music of officially forbidden Vodou (what is commonly known as voodoo) ceremonies.

  • Bessie Jones was one of the most popular performers on the 1960s and '70s folk circuit, appearing usually at the helm of the Georgia Sea Island Singers at colleges, festivals, the Poor People's March on Washington, and Jimmy Carter's inauguration. "Before This Time Another Year" is a collection of highlights of her classic recordings with the Singers, combined with previously unavailable solo and small-group performances captured by Alan Lomax between 1959 and 1966. Alan Lomax first visited the Georgia Sea Island of St. Simons in June of 1935 with folklorist Mary Elizabeth Barnicle and author Zora Neale Hurston. There they met the remarkable Spiritual Singers Society of Coastal Georgia, as the group was then called, and recorded several hours of their songs and dances for the Library of Congress. Returning 25 years later, Lomax found that the Singers were still active, and had been enriched by the addition of Bessie Jones, a South Georgia native with a massive collection of songs going back to the slavery era. Over the next several years, Lomax and Jones worked together to present, promote, and teach Southern black folk song across the country, from nightclubs to elementary schools.

    Recordings made before 1946 and the high resolution American Patchwork audio have been made available to us through the auspices of the American Folklife Center of The Library of Congress. The recordings made in Kentucky and Michigan in 1937, in Mississippi in 1932, 1933, 1939, 1941, 1942 and 1946, in Florida and the Bahamas in 1935, and Haiti in 1936-37, were digitized through a collaboration with the AFC and the Association for Cultural Equity.
